Master Class – Happy birthday GDPR! Data enforcement trends across Europe
On 25 May 2019, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) celebrate their first birthday. Over the last year, much has been said about the myriad of stringent legal requirements in the GDPR. Little however has become clear on how the GDPR is, or will be, enforced.
During the Master Class, De Brauw’s Arjan Kleinhout, Axel Arnbak and Salima Guettache will discuss:
– Has the GDPR delivered on its promise of firm supervision, harsh sanctions and the Pan-European “one-stop shop” for privacy enforcement?
– What is on the enforcement agenda of Europe’s most prominent national Data Protection Authorities and the EDPB?
– Is the real threat of enforcement actually coming from data-driven supervision in other domains, such as competition law, or sector-specific oversight, such as regulators in the financial sector?
– How should companies address potential overstepping of enforcement jurisdiction by regulators eager to use the GDPR for their own agendas?
