According to clients interviewed by Chambers, he “shows a deep knowledge of the law and an appreciation of the practical need to seek a commercial resolution.”

Chambers further mentions that Gertjan is admired for his technical expertise and considered a “fierce opponent in court”‘. Clients also note Gertjan’s strong performance in the courtroom; according to Chambers: “He’s our favourite hi-tech patent litigator“. His scientific background is appreciated by clients, as reported by Chambers: “He’s not just a lawyer but also a technician. He understands technology quickly, is thorough and detailed, and very easy to work with.”

Gertjan studied both law and physics at Utrecht University, and is a Fulbright alumnus of Franklin Pierce Law Center (currently the University of New Hampshire). In 1995, he joined De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek and was admitted to the bar. He has been a partner at De Brauw since 2004.
