Marnix Leijten specialises in complex commercial litigation and national and international arbitration. Marnix handles arbitration cases in a wide variety of industry sectors, administered by the world’s leading arbitration institutes and situated in many different countries. His work includes energy, distribution, technology, electronics, IT, rail and air transport, insurance, investment, projects, construction and M&A disputes. Marnix is the Dutch member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris.
Marnix has particular experience in advising large corporates in the electricity, oil and natural gas markets. This experience has been enhanced by his practising law with Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP in New York. He continues to advise several major players in the energy sector involved in transactions, projects and cross-border disputes associated with the liberalisation of the electricity and gas markets.
Recent work includes:
- representing a Dutch insurance company in an investor state arbitration relating to an Eastern European investment
- representing a multinational oil company in parallel proceedings in a state court in Houston, Texas and The Hague, the Netherlands over deep sea drilling techniques
- advising a multinational Dutch medical systems supplier in arbitration proceedings under the UNCITRAL Rules in Germany
- advising one of the largest European utilities in several contemplated energy transactions in the Netherlands
- advising a state owned public transport provider in arbitrations in Germany and Dutch court proceedings against a European competitor
- advising several gas suppliers and importers in international arbitrations under the ICC and Uncitral Rules in Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands on high value pricing disputes under long-term wholesale gas supply contracts
