Simon is a barrister admitted to practice in all English and Dutch courts. His practice focuses on patent work in a wide variety of technical fields. A chemist by training, he now has twenty years' experience in patents, having started his career with the European Patent Office in Munich. He passed the EQE for European Patent Attorneys whilst still at the EPO. He was called to the Bar in 2000.
A particular focus is litigation in the pharmaceuticals and life sciences sector. Simon's chemical-technical background allows him to get to grips quickly and effectively with complex cases. His clients include some of the largest manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and medical devices in the world. He has acted in recent years on behalf of pharmaceutical companies in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation in respect of a number of blockbuster drugs, including Losec® and Paroxetine (Seroxat®, Paxil®). He was the lead Dutch counsel in the recent successful Lipitor® litigation against an Indian generics manufacturer. He has also had notable successes in the field of coronary stents, where he acts for two of the world's leading stent manufacturers.
Other recent work includes cases in the field of biotechnology; patents relating to plant breeding; telecoms patents; business method patents; patents on renewable energy; and a number of cases on the question of patents on industry standards. He has experience in the field of customs seizures on behalf of both claimants and defendants, and is an authority on the new seizure possibilties available in the Netherlands under the Enforcement Directive. His non-contentious work includes advising and assisting companies on building and exploiting effective IP portfolios to protect their competitive edge in the market.
Simon is a member of EPLAW, the AIPPI, the Intellectual Property Bar Association and the American Chemical Society. He lectures regularly and is involved in the training of Dutch patent attorneys.
