Global Arbitration Review: De Brauw sets up in Singapore

Dutch firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek has relocated Amsterdam-based partner Edward van Geuns and senior associate Kirstin Nijburg to Singapore to develop the firm’s international arbitration practice in Asia.
Van Geuns moved to Singapore in January to set up the firm's Asia arbitration practice and Nijburg joined him on 1 March. They continue to work with De Brauw’s five-partner international arbitration group in Amsterdam, including new partner Albert Marsman, who was promoted to the partnership in January. Van Geuns tells GAR that the firm decided to relocate part of its arbitration practice to Singapore as many of the firm’s clients operate in the region. “We have also seen an increase in our Asian caseload over the last few years, so it made sense to have a permanent arbitration presence here,” he says. He adds that his relocation to Singapore was driven by a predicted rise in gas pricing disputes in Asia. In recent months, the city has emerged as potential venue for future gas pricing arbitrations.
