Stefan Sagel accepted his appointment as professor at Leiden University's Law Faculty on 5 September. The subject of his inaugural lecture was "Work and Security, fair dismissals in time of hard and fast rules".
Sagel discussed how much scope our new employment laws leave for reaching balanced decisions in dismissal cases, taking into account all relevant circumstances, and for achieving tailor-made solutions.
He comes to the conclusion that although the new dismissal laws leave little space to do justice to all the specific circumstances of a case, they create new possibilities to do just that with claims that are brought outside the field of dismissal law.
