Energy transition

The transition to renewable energy brings vast changes and presents several challenges to the energy sector, and De Brauw is prepared for it. We support several clients in their energy transition matters, and are the leaders when it comes to related emerging areas of law, such as large-scale gas storage and LNG. We specialise in all aspects of the sector, ranging from transactions and regulation to litigation and criminal enforcement, seamlessly integrating the various nuances in any given case. De Brauw is also one of the first law firms to participate in the national transition coalition, in which around 50 key players in the energy sector join to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and move this topic from the political agenda to the board room.

Recent work includes advising clients on the following large-scale projects:

  • TenneT, the Dutch TSO for electricity and responsible for connecting new offshore wind farms to the Dutch electricity grid. We advise TenneT in relation to the recently announced multi-party agreement for the development of a large renewable European electricity system in the North Sea, the “North Sea Wind Power Hub”. In the next few years, TenneT will build five platforms, connecting 3,500 MW. We are advising TenneT on various aspects of this project, including transactional, regulatory, tax, planning and permitting.
  • Vopak, one of the leading independent tank storage companies in the world. We assist Vopak with many national and international transactional matters, including the LNG field.
  • ENEL, the Italian multi-national renewable energy company. Our work includes various transactions, cross-border restructurings and arbitrations.
  • ENGIE, the French multinational utility company. We advise ENGIE on various matters, including the transfer of ENGIE’s stake in the Paiton power station to Nebras; various potential acquisitions of wind energy parks in the Netherlands; and the sale, together with E.On, of its 49% stake in Slovenský plynárenský priemysel, a key gas operator in Slovakia.
