Employment law chronicle - looking back and ahead

De Brauw's Stefan Sagel and Irina Timp have published an article in legal journal NJB outlining significant developments in employment law over the past year. The chronicle examines significant developments in both Dutch and European employment law from October 2024 to mid-November 2025.

While the Dutch legislature produced relatively few tangible steps during this period, the Supreme Court more than compensated for this. In a series of landmark rulings, the highest court in the Netherlands covered topics ranging from whistleblower protection, grounds for dismissal grounds and the definition of employment contracts, to equal treatment, academic freedom and paying the costs of professional training.

At the European level, the chronicle addresses key regulatory developments including the Pay Transparency Directive, the AI Regulation, the revised European Works Council Directive and the Platform Work Directive – alongside noteworthy Court of Justice decisions on working time, collective dismissal, equal treatment and compulsory vaccination .
