Summary

Johan is a partner in our Litigation group, with extensive experience in mass claims and complex cross-border litigation. He is an expert in consumer protection law, including matters in the digital sphere. His practice covers all levels of the judiciary, including proceedings before the Dutch Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice. Johan is admitted to the Supreme Court bar.

Johan contributes to leading Dutch civil law commentaries and publishes regularly in academic journals. He also serves as editor-in-chief of the Dutch law journal on property, contract and tort law.

Recent work includes:

  • Defending leading tech companies in class action lawsuits based on EU consumer protection laws.
  • Representing a US tech company in private enforcement cases under the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act.
  • Defending several corporations in follow-on competition damages proceedings, up to the Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice.
  • Advising and representing a defence contractor in a EUR 350 million contractual dispute with NATO and NATO member states.
  • Acting for Defence for Children in a collective action and in Supreme Court proceedings to secure children's rights to water and to housing in the Netherlands.
