Stefan Sagel was appointed professor of Employment Law on the Faculty of Law at Leiden University on 1 November. The appointment takes place at a time in which there is a great deal of discussion about employment law and a fundamental revision of the rules governing dismissal seems imminent.
As Stefan states in the press release about his appointment: "The intended revision of the rules governing dismissal is presented as making these rules less strict and more uniform, but the question is whether that's true. We currently have a system with two routes for dismissal: dissolution by the court or termination after a permit is obtained from the UWV. This leads to inequality before the law because it's the employer that can decide which route he's going to follow. In the new system, we still have these two routes, but then they depend on the reason for dismissal. If you really want to make the rules uniform, then choosing one uniform route is obvious."
Stefan obtained his doctorate earlier this year from Leiden University with a dissertation on instant dismissal. In addition to his professorship at Leiden University (one day a week), he will remain with the firm in his position as partner.
